MAY 12th BEER CAN HOUSE: Many landlords dread what they find after a tenant vacates a property. Wait till you see the beer can house. At least this Landlord got a return for the clean up! Here's what happened - the tenant lived at this residence for 8 years in Utah. The landlord thought he was a great tenant. He never called or complained, and was never late on a payment. These pictures can't describe the aluminum monument that this townhouse contained. Some cans had been moved out - there were tunnels going from one room to the next - until they caved in. All total there were 70,000 cans which reportedly fetched over $800 when the landlord took them to the re-cycler.
MAY 12th CACTUS FINGER: More of us should take this approach to the double standards imposed upon us by our neighbors. This gentleman got fed up with his neighbor's constant misuse of his 'town council' standing. He customized the vent of his house to reflect his feelings artistically... is that really a cactus? When the owner of this house was starting to break ground - his neighbor insisted that his soil be tested, even though this test had been previously done. This cost the owner $3000 and a four month delay on construction. When the house had been built, the neighbor was upset it blocked his view, and the town made the owner drop his house 18 inches. This cost him an additional $25,000. In response to the frivolous neighborly penalties, the owner erected this "cactus art" facing his neighbor's house. After putting up the "cactus vent" - he was told he would have to remove it. The owner agreed only if his neighbor apologized for the headaches he caused. The neighbor did, so the owner removed his artwork. What a nice ending...
June 2nd Online Hoax Fuels House Trashing: This is terrible. Everything including the kitchen sink was stripped from the home after an internet classified ad invited people to the property to take whatever they wanted for FREE! Unfortunately, the actual owner was unaware of the ad, and the free for all going on at the property. She still has no idea why anyone would do this to her.

June 16th TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS: At 58, Anderman – who lives on the farm with his wife, Christina, and two of their three sons – could be considered an icon of the '60s. Rob Anderman believes the rest of the world could learn some lessons from Morninglory and other intentional communities. "People learning to live together, it's the key to life, co-operation," he says. "It's like the best tool we have. We're heading for some really heavy rides, and until people learn to co-operate it's going to be very hard. All Morninglory's children grew up without TV. And although each of the farm's dwellings has solar power (the heating is all solar or wood), the number of appliances can be counted on one hand – two blenders, a food processor and a powered stone grain mill. There are no washers, dryers or cellphones. The telephone is the only outside service, and only two homes have running water. Residents are not anti-technology, however. Laptop computers abound (they use less power than desktops), as do solar panels. Douglas Gloin is a freelance writer and editor who lives in the Madawaska Valley.

SHIPPING CONTAINERS MAKE HOMES: Projects vary in scope from simple studios to high-end modern housing. Building with containers has some unique advantages. Structures made from them can be disassembled, moved, and then reassembled with ease. Because they are common - they are also relatively cheap. When futurist Stewart Brand needed a place to assemble all the material he needed to write "How Buildings Learn," he converted a shipping container into office space, and wrote up the conversion process in the same book. In 2006, Southern California Architect Peter DeMaria, designed the first 2 story shipping container home in the U.S. as an approved structural system under the Uniform Building Code (UBC). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvcUe_yPHdg cut and paste this link into your browser |
